Abstract
Quick and easy access to correct functioning resuscitation equipment is critical to successful life support in a state of emergency. Since medications are used in emergency state only, emergency cart medication¡¯s inventory turnover is low and it is easy to stock medications for a long term, which leads to the fact that checking expiry dates of medications is important. Earlier emergency cart medication management system of Asan Medical Center (AMC) was computerized, yet inconvenient and less efficient. Highly pharmacy-dependent work flow also increased the burden. Therefore, AMC modified emergency cart medication management system for process improvement. An emergency cart medication is classified according to expiry dates notation, and pharmacy exchange annually medication which lacks expiry dates notation. When doctor prescribes emergency cart medication, pharmacists provide medication with enough expiry dates. In this study, we considered emergency cart medication management system modification and evaluated process improvement of modified system. We analyzed the cases of medication exchange and computerized correction during 7 months before modifying system and surveyed 36 staff in charge of emergency cart on departments where emergency cart are kept. Through questionnaire we assessed restocking time, efficiency, convenience, satisfaction, improvement about before and after system modification. In results, the monthly mean number of computerized correction was 87.4 cases, the monthly mean number of exchange was 45 cases, and the monthly mean number of exchange medications was 161.7 ampule. The survey showed earlier system was somewhat inconvenience and complicated, while modified system is more improved and helping the whole work. Process efficiency has improved since emergency cart medication management system modified because of the procedure simplification, medication with enough expiry dates, restocking time reduction.
